CLEAN AIR AWARE PROGRAM

The Clean Air Aware program is a part of the services provided by the Madison County Council of Governments (MCCOG). MCCOG is a cooperative, countywide planning organization focused on  Madison County, the Town of Fortville, and the Town of Daleville, Indiana.

The Clean Air Aware initiative focuses on improving air quality in MCCOG's planning area and educating the planning area's communities about the benefits of clean air. The initiative also highlights simple ways the communities in MCCOG's planning area can be a part of improving their air quality to better their environment, health, and economy.

WHAT IS AIR POLLUTION?
There are two main types of air pollution that are dangerous to breathe:
  • Ground-level Ozone
  • Particulate Matter
Ground-level ozone peaks in the summer months, from May through October, when temperatures are the highest and sunlight is the strongest.

Particulate matter is a year-round problem and one of the most dangerous outdoor air pollutants.
HEALTH RISKS:
Breathing in air pollutants has been linked to health problems like asthma, chronic bronchitis, and decreased lung function. Older adults, children, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions are most at risk for health problems, but even healthy people can be affected by air pollution.

However, health is not the only area impacted by poor air quality. Click the button below to learn how poor air quality can also negatively  impact our economy and quality of life.

AIR QUALITY CONDITIONS
To help the public become more aware of air quality and its effects, the EPA has developed tools like the Air Quality Index and Ozone Action Day Alerts

Knowing this issue exists doesn't solve the problem. That is why the Madison County Council of Governments developed the Clean Air Aware Initiative. Want to learn how you can help improve air quality? View the Clean Air Tips page!
